From its origins in 1871 as "Number 1 School" to its final graduation ceremony in 1999, Wilmington High School occupied a place of prominence on the Wilmington educational scene.

At the inauguration of its new site on Delaware Avenue in 1901, where it was to remain for the next sixty years, the school was praised as "the pride and boast of our city."
